Welcome to Year 2
Year 2 Curriculum Map
Welcome to Year 2!
Welcome to the Autumn term in Year 2! The children will be in class with Miss Jackson (Monday and Tuesday) and Miss White (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with additional support from Mrs Pullan. Above is our Long Term Plan for the year with details about the Year 2 curriculum. Below are some brief details about elements of our learning this half term and some key information to help the half term run smoothly. There are also Knowledge Organisers for our science, RE, history and geography for your information. Please do keep an eye out for regular information about our class on our blog (details for which will be on the school newsletter, although if you’ve found this, you’re in the right place!) and any last minute information or changes on the school app. If you have any questions, please contact both of us at anna.white@adel-st-john.leeds.sch.uk or emma.jackson@adel-st-john.leeds.sch.uk and we will reply as soon as we can.
Thanks for your continued support.
Kind regards,
Miss White and Miss Jackson
Reading: Children will continue to bring home books weekly and have 1:1 reading sessions in school. We will collect in returned books on a Monday and keep these until Tuesday when new books will be provided. Please aim to read these, and other books, with your child for 5 to 10 minutes each day. There is a yellow reading record that will come home with these books too, please indicate when a book has been read with a tick or initials and any comments if you feel necessary. Please return the reading record when books are returned. Reading in school will take place as part of our phonics sessions and children will also be heard 1:1 during the week.
Spellings: Spellings will be taught in class during our phonics lessons. There will be a weekly quiz of 5 words and a dictated sentence towards the end of each unit. These will all be taken from the review part of our phonics sessions and, as such, words will not be sent home to practice.
Below is a breakdown of the sounds and spelling patterns for the Summer term.
Handwriting: Handwriting sessions will initially take place every day. We learn cursive handwriting in Year 2. Below is a link to example joins we will be learning.
Cursive Letter Joins - Animations and Worksheets Letter version 2
PE: PE this half term is Dance on Tuesday and Striking and Fielding on Friday. Children should come to school wearing their PE kit – black jogging bottoms or shorts (if the weather is fit), white t-shirt, black jacket and trainers.
Things to remember:
- All children should bring a flask or bottle of water to school. Water only, please. This should be taken home and washed every day.
- Named pumps must be worn in school. Children should be able to tie laces quickly if they have lace-up pumps/outdoor shoes and pumps should be checked by a parent every half term to ensure they are in good condition to prevent trip hazards.
- Named, appropriate clothing for the weather should be brought every day – please ensure your child has a coat if rain is forecast or looks likely, especially as we head towards the winter.
- School Policy is that, other than for religious reasons, children should not wear jewellery in school apart from a watch. These need to be removed for PE lessons.

Nell Bank Trip
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
Years 2 have had an amazing day at Nell Bank today. We have learnt all about different animal senses and how they use them to catch their prey or stay hidden from predators. We had a really successful session pond dipping and found LOTS of newts. Finally, we had some fun in the sun with water play.
Busy week!

It has been a very busy week in year 2 this week.
World Book Day was lots of fun being dressed in our pjs with a favourite book. We also had a very special visitor to our classroom who was caught on CCTV! It was Paddington! He left his suitcase in our classroom with some items that are special to him and a little not to us. We talked all about Paddington nd tried some marmalade sandwiches.
We have also had a visit from the Road Safety Team from Leeds City Council. Harriet taught us all about staying safe in a car and the green cross code. We also went outside and practised crossing the road safely.
Robot Algorithms

Year 2 have started their first lesson of robot algorithms today in computing. We began by giving each other instructions to follow. It was hard to be really precise and follow the instructions exactly like a robot would.
Online Safety Week
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
This week the whole school has been learning about online safety. In year 2 we have been learning about how anything we post online stays there and can be accessed even if deleted. We have looked at different devices at home that can we linked to the internet and how to do an online search with keywords to make results more suitable.

Science - Testing materials
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
In Science this week, Year 2 have been testing the properties of different everyday materials. We found different items in the classroom, identified the material they were made from and then chose different properties to test. W found that some materials are hard, flexible, smooth, waterproof and much more!
Testing Stability in DT
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
We have hit the ground running in Year 2 since the holidays and have started this week on our new DT project for this half term. We will be designing and making a chair for baby bear!
Our first task was to test the stability of different 3D shapes which linked really well with our maths learning this week. We tested the stability of a sphere, a cube, a pyramid and a cylinder. We found that the pyramid was the most stable because it had a flat base, a wide base and wasn't too tall. We then used this information to analyse some different examples of chairs and how suitable they would be for baby bear. This will help us when it comes to our designing and making stages.
It's the final countdown!!

What a final week we've had! We've finally remade our ferris wheels using stronger card so they are all still standing and in working order. They look amazing and I am so proud of the learning attitudes the children displayed making amendments and really thinking about how to improve them. We had our Christmas party on Wednesday complete with party games and prizes. We have also done some writing for pleasure where the children could choose what they wanted to write on a Christmas theme. The concentration in the room was amazing - you could have heard a pin drop.
I hope you all have a lovely Christmas. See you in the new year.
What a week!

We’ve had another busy week in Year 2! I was so proud of the children during their nativity performances, time after time - they blew me away with how well they spoke and remembered their lines and acting. I hope you all enjoyed watching too.
On Monday, we had a visit from Year 4 who played some Christmas tunes on their ukuleles for us - thank you Year 4!
On Friday, we have took part in the Santa Dash which the children enjoyed all dressed in their Christmas jumpers.
A busy week!
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
We’re jamming lots in to these last few weeks before Christmas. As well as nativity rehearsals, we’ve started planning our first fully independent piece of writing, been learning about campaigns in history and done some more practical maths on adding two 2-digit numbers.
