Year 2 Curriculum Map

Welcome to Year 2!

Welcome to the Autumn term in Year 2! The children will be in class with Miss Jackson (Monday and Tuesday) and Miss White (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with additional support from Mrs Pullan. Above is our Long Term Plan for the year with details about the Year 2 curriculum. Below are some brief details about elements of our learning this half term and some key information to help the half term run smoothly. There are also Knowledge Organisers for our science, RE, history and geography for your information. Please do keep an eye out for regular information about our class on our blog (details for which will be on the school newsletter, although if you’ve found this, you’re in the right place!) and any last minute information or changes on the school app. If you have any questions, please contact both of us at anna.white@adel-st-john.leeds.sch.uk or emma.jackson@adel-st-john.leeds.sch.uk and we will reply as soon as we can.

Thanks for your continued support.

Kind regards,

Miss White and Miss Jackson

Reading: Children will continue to bring home books weekly and have 1:1 reading sessions in school. We will collect in returned books on a Monday and keep these until Tuesday when new books will be provided.  Please aim to read these, and other books, with your child for 5 to 10 minutes each day. There is a yellow reading record that will come home with these books too, please indicate when a book has been read with a tick or initials and any comments if you feel necessary. Please return the reading record when books are returned. Reading in school will take place as part of our phonics sessions and children will also be heard 1:1 during the week.

Spellings: Spellings will be taught in class during our phonics lessons. There will be a weekly quiz of 5 words and a dictated sentence towards the end of each unit. These will all be taken from the review part of our phonics sessions and, as such, words will not be sent home to practice.

Below is a breakdown of the sounds and spelling patterns for the Summer term.

Handwriting: Handwriting sessions will initially take place every day. We learn cursive handwriting in Year 2. Below is a link to example joins we will be learning.

PE: PE this half term is Fundamentals on Tuesday and Team Building on Friday. Children should come to school wearing their PE kit – black jogging bottoms or shorts (if the weather is fit), white t-shirt, black jacket and trainers.

Things to remember:

  • All children should bring a flask or bottle of water to school. Water only, please. This should be taken home and washed every day.
  • Named pumps must be worn in school. Children should be able to tie laces quickly if they have lace-up pumps/outdoor shoes and pumps should be checked by a parent every half term to ensure they are in good condition to prevent trip hazards.
  • Named, appropriate clothing for the weather should be brought every day – please ensure your child has a coat if rain is forecast or looks likely, especially as we head towards the winter.
  • School Policy is that, other than for religious reasons, children should not wear jewellery in school apart from a watch. These need to be removed for PE lessons.

Online Safety Week

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog

This week the whole school has been learning about online safety. In year 2 we have been learning about how anything we post online stays there and can be accessed even if deleted. We have looked at different devices at home that can we linked to the internet and how to do an online search with keywords to make results more suitable.

Children’s Mental Health Week

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog

This week, we have been thinking about Children’s Mental Health Week. The theme this year is ‘This is my place’ which focuses on belonging being good for our mental health. Each child in school has made a map of all the places they feel they belong. Here are some Year 2 examples.

History of Adel walk

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog

Year 2 had a very wet walk around Adel this morning as part of their local history topic. We stopped at lots of historically significant places on our walk. It’s fantastic to see all the children so enthusiastic about the history that is on their doorstep!

Learning about Jewish people

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog

This week we have started our learning about Jewish people with a hands on session looking at a variety of items that might be special to a Jewish person. We looked and handled the objects first discussing what we thought they were. Then we found out their names and uses and thought about what the objects could teach us about Jewish people.

Year 2 Class Blog

A busy week!

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog

We’re jamming lots in to these last few weeks before Christmas. As well as nativity rehearsals, we’ve started planning our first fully independent piece of writing, been learning about campaigns in history and done some more practical maths on adding two 2-digit numbers.

Computer Programming

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog

This half term in computing, Year 2 are learning about programming using the beebots. Here they are writing directions for their beebots and programming them to move around the map and enjoy a bit of park life between the trees, ponds and animals!

Peace Art

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog

Last week was Interfaith Week. We did several activities in school and in class we thought about the idea of peace. We talked about how peace is a central theme to many different faiths and how learning about different faiths can promote peace between people. We thought about different symbols of peace and how we could design our own artwork to represent the value of peace.

Ferris wheel fun!

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog

We’ve had a fantastic week in Year 2 with a focus on our DT (Design Technology) for this term. We have designed, and are in the middle of making, our working models of a Ferris wheel. The children have been working in pairs to create these. A big well done to Edwin and James who have managed to get theirs stood up and working already! Just need to add the pods for passengers next. Check back here next week for the finished wheels.

Fabulous First Week Back!

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog

We have had a great first week back after the half term holiday. We have continued with our biography writing about Malala Yousafzai, started our geography topic all about Yorkshire and begun our new set of PE sessions. I had intended to upload some photos of PE - ball skills, but we were having so much fun in the lesson, I forgot to take any pictures!

Here is some more practical maths for you instead! We have been looking at how making 10 can help with adding 3 one-digit numbers. Which of these would you find easier to complete?
