Welcome to Year 2
Year 2 Curriculum Map
Welcome to Year 2!
Welcome to the Autumn term in Year 2! The children will be in class with Miss Jackson (Monday and Tuesday) and Miss White (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with additional support from Mrs Pullan. Above is our Long Term Plan for the year with details about the Year 2 curriculum. Below are some brief details about elements of our learning this half term and some key information to help the half term run smoothly. There are also Knowledge Organisers for our science, RE, history and geography for your information. Please do keep an eye out for regular information about our class on our blog (details for which will be on the school newsletter, although if you’ve found this, you’re in the right place!) and any last minute information or changes on the school app. If you have any questions, please contact both of us at anna.white@adel-st-john.leeds.sch.uk or emma.jackson@adel-st-john.leeds.sch.uk and we will reply as soon as we can.
Thanks for your continued support.
Kind regards,
Miss White and Miss Jackson
Reading: Children will continue to bring home books weekly and have 1:1 reading sessions in school. We will collect in returned books on a Monday and keep these until Tuesday when new books will be provided. Please aim to read these, and other books, with your child for 5 to 10 minutes each day. There is a yellow reading record that will come home with these books too, please indicate when a book has been read with a tick or initials and any comments if you feel necessary. Please return the reading record when books are returned. Reading in school will take place as part of our phonics sessions and children will also be heard 1:1 during the week.
Spellings: Spellings will be taught in class during our phonics lessons. There will be a weekly quiz of 5 words and a dictated sentence towards the end of each unit. These will all be taken from the review part of our phonics sessions and, as such, words will not be sent home to practice.
Below is a breakdown of the sounds and spelling patterns for the Summer term.
Handwriting: Handwriting sessions will initially take place every day. We learn cursive handwriting in Year 2. Below is a link to example joins we will be learning.

PE: PE this half term is Fundamentals on Tuesday and Team Building on Friday. Children should come to school wearing their PE kit – black jogging bottoms or shorts (if the weather is fit), white t-shirt, black jacket and trainers.
Things to remember:
- All children should bring a flask or bottle of water to school. Water only, please. This should be taken home and washed every day.
- Named pumps must be worn in school. Children should be able to tie laces quickly if they have lace-up pumps/outdoor shoes and pumps should be checked by a parent every half term to ensure they are in good condition to prevent trip hazards.
- Named, appropriate clothing for the weather should be brought every day – please ensure your child has a coat if rain is forecast or looks likely, especially as we head towards the winter.
- School Policy is that, other than for religious reasons, children should not wear jewellery in school apart from a watch. These need to be removed for PE lessons.

Post!
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
This morning, Year 2 have posted our persuasive letters in the post box outside school. We have been writing to Mr Dalrymple to persuade him to change some things around school! We’ll have to wait and see if he takes on any of our ideas which included a swimming pool in the playground and non-uniform Fridays!

Year 2 have had a fantastic day at Yorkshire Sculpture Park today. We had a tour of different sculptures, did various drawing and printing activities. Then in the afternoon, we made out own sculpture park and shared ideas about each sculpture. A very enjoyable day!

Year 2 have been doing ‘fundamentals’ in their PE lessons this half term – developing the skills of hopping, skipping, jumping, sprinting, balancing and changing direction. The children have loved some of the new games such as daisy chain tag, the car game and domes and dishes. They have been working collaboratively, taking turns and sharing ideas. Here are some photos of the children this week when they were using French skipping ropes (elastics) to jump over. They loved it!

Ferris wheel fun!
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
We’ve had a fantastic week in Year 2 with a focus on our DT (Design Technology) for this term. We have designed, and are in the middle of making, our working models of a Ferris wheel. The children have been working in pairs to create these. A big well done to Edwin and James who have managed to get theirs stood up and working already! Just need to add the pods for passengers next. Check back here next week for the finished wheels.
Fabulous First Week Back!
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
We have had a great first week back after the half term holiday. We have continued with our biography writing about Malala Yousafzai, started our geography topic all about Yorkshire and begun our new set of PE sessions. I had intended to upload some photos of PE - ball skills, but we were having so much fun in the lesson, I forgot to take any pictures!
Here is some more practical maths for you instead! We have been looking at how making 10 can help with adding 3 one-digit numbers. Which of these would you find easier to complete?
End of Half Term 1

What a fantastic first half term we have had in Year 2! The children have been amazing. They show a thirst for knowledge and a real love of learning. This week, we have started our Addition and Subtraction unit in maths and below are some pictures of us using ten-frames and counters to physically represent all the number bonds to 10 in our first lesson recapping Year 1 learning. Make sure you also check out Seesaw, where the children did their final responses to our RE unit; Gospel. There they explained how they found the good news that Jesus taught of friendship, forgiveness and peace in their lives at school.
Andy Warhol inspired art
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
This term in our art lessons, we have been looking at the work of Andy Warhol. We have commented on one of his most famous works explaining why we like it and what we notice. We then took selfies to turn into Warhol inspired pieces.
Trip to Nell Bank
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
On Friday, we had a fantastic visit to Nell Bank. The very wet weather didn’t hold us back and we did some great fun and hands on learning linked to our science topic - Living Things and their Habitats. We learnt how different animals use their senses to help them to thrive in their habitats; did a habitat trail and finished the day with some pond dipping. The children behaved impeccably and the staff at Nell Bank were amazed with their science knowledge and resilience in less an ideal conditions. Well done to everyone!
