Year 6 Curriculum Map
The Year 6 long term plan is below. This shows the coverage of work for the whole year. Items to note: Art and DT are generally taught on alternative terms; this is the same for History and Geography.
As with other half terms, we will be covering many topics across the curriculum in the first half of the Spring Term.
English
This half term, English is split into Reading, Writing, Grammar and Spellings.
Reading
We will be looking a range of texts (both fiction and fiction) to build the suite of reading skills - fluency, vocab knowledge, retrieval, inference, explanation and summary. A greater focus will be given to deeper retrieval questions and inference skills (including explanations). Mainly, a text will be read each week to develop each skill; some of the texts are linked to our current half term value and out Science and History units.
Please ensure your child is reading at the very least 3 times per week at home to support them, not just reading independently but also support learning across the curriculum. Planners should be signed on the day they have read, with a comment as appropriate. If children particularly like a word or phrase they can write it in their planner as well.
Writing
This half term will see the end of year assessment. We will be updating previous pieces and writing an information report. The information report will be based on the History unit in Summer 1: the changes in religion under the Tudors. We will be looking to use our skills to to up-level the previous pieces and then showcasing our skills in the information report. Grammar and spelling will taught as part of the Writing units.
Maths
Maths for this half term, as with the previous will be focussed on project work. This will be using all of the Maths knowledge we have learnt in KS2 and applying it to real life situations, such as managing a bakery and being a tourist operator.
RE
This half term we will be completing our previous unit on belief in God - looking at those who are theist, atheist and agnostic. Following this we will be looking at a new unit relating to the Kingdom of God, looking at the question tare tackling a new question: What kind of king is Jesus? This unit will encourage the children to make links between biblical texts and the concept of the Kingdom of God, how this is reflects in Christian beliefs and practises and making links between Christian beliefs about God's Kingdom and issues, problems and opportunities in the world today.
Geography
In Geography we will be recapping all of our geography skills under the theme of Around the World. Children will create a poster, fact file or presentation about a various places around the world, with each piece work showing a different geography focus, such as the human and physical features of North America, or the industry of Germany.
DT
DT will have a big focus this half term: completing our structures topic from earlier in the year, seeing children consider the design of and make a photo frame. We will also be doing a cooking and nutrition unit, as part of Healthy Living Week, creating a 2-course dinner for a part of four. And we will be using TinkerCAD (this is a 'kids' version of CAD - Computer Aided Design - an app that is used in wide range of job fields) to programme a navigation tool to produce a multifunctional device for trekkers. This will involve thinking about customer needs, the design brief, as well as creating a programme.
Computing
This half term, children will also be using TinkerCAD to design and create a 3D model of a desk tidy.
PE
In PE, we will be looking at athletics, improving our running technique.

Photo frames in DT
Posted: Jul 8, 2026 by: A White (awhite) on: Year 6 Class Blog
This week, Year 6 have been putting the finishing touches to their wooden photo frames as part of their final DT project.
They have had to saw the wood to the correct size and create an angle on the end of each side that will fit together. Then use a hot glue gun to secure the frame together. Before finally decorating their frame.
Here is a selection and I’m sure you’ll agree, they look beautiful!
