Year 6 Curriculum Map

The Year 6 long term plan is below.  This shows the coverage of work for the whole year.  Items to note: Art and DT are generally taught on alternative terms; this is the same for History and Geography.

In this half term, we will be covering many topics across the curriculum.

English

English is split into Reading, Writing and Spellings.

Reading

We will be looking a range of texts (both fiction and fiction) to build the suite of reading skills - fluency, vocab knowledge, retrieval, inference, explanation and summary).  Mainly, a text will be read each week to develop each skill; some of the texts are linked to our current half term value and out Science and History units.

Please ensure your child is reading at the very least 3 times per week at home to support them, not just reading independently but also support learning across the curriculum.  Planners should be signed on the day they have read, with a comment as appropriate.  If children particularly like a word or phrase they can write it in their planner as well.

Writing

We will be writing a range of pieces in different styles.  This is to build writing (and reading) skills and develop methods of how to have an impact on the reader (or listener).  The writing units this half term are:

  • Campaign Speech - based on the book Holes
  • Maya Setting Description
  • Amazon Rainforest Report

Spelling

Spelling is still an important part of learning, helping children develop their vocabulary, how they convey meaning and how they are understood.

New spellings will be learnt weekly, supported by activities in class and homework.  Spelling will come in two lists: rules and common exception words.

The Rule Spelling words for this half term are:

Maths

As with the previous half term, Maths will be structured to recap existing knowledge and teach new learning.  This also continues with the application of the concrete, pictorial and abstract strategies, and knowing when it is best to apply them.  The topics covered this term are:

  • Fractions
  • Converting units
  • Ratio

We are still continuing with arithmetic practise, which includes a weekly test and times table practise (which will also include some testing)

Science

Children will be learning about electricity in Science this half term, focussed on the research question: what happens when we remove a component from an electrical circuit?  They will recap voltage, circuits and components of circuits and take a deeper look at the reasons for how circuit components function.

RE

We will continue to learn about Jewish People and their faith this half term under the question of: How does following God affect a Jewish person's daily life? We will be looking at the rules within the Jewish Faith regarding kosher food, .  The knowledge organiser is below.

Geography

We will be learning a new topic in Geography: South America and Rainforests.  Children will be researching and investigating the question: Why does the Amazon Matter?  Topics they will be learning about include: tropical and temperate rainforests (including features of rainforests and food within them) and the importance of rainforest and risks and threats to them (including deforestation).

DT

DT is linked to our Science unit, looking at electrical systems.  This is all focussed on researching, designing, creating and testing a steady hand game.  By Christmas children should have created a hand held toy.

Computing

This half term, we will be creating a web page.  Considering factors for design and creation and addressing any snags.

PE

In PE, we will be continuing with Gymnastics, followed by a new unit on dance - looking at phrases, rhythms, dynamics and formations.

One third of the year done!

Posted: Dec 22, 2025 by: Alex Tosta (ATosta) on: Year 6 Class Blog

So, we have come to the end of the longest term and so much has been done.

In Maths we have looked at place value, the four operations, fractions (and more fractions) converting units and just started ratio (a new subject).  Y6 have written 6 pieces of writing: a narrative, two reports, a campaign speech, a character description, a setting description (an we did some poetry performance).  We have learnt about the Maya in History, looked at Rainforests and the Amazon in Geography; circuits and light have been studied in Science; we have looked deeply into Jewish believe in God and how they follow God’s word.  In Art Y6 designed and created their own worry doll, whereas in DT we designed and made a hand-held electrical toy.  We have learnt how to introduce ourselves and say who our family is.  Music has seen us look at jazz and swing.  And in Computing we have looked at making a website, use scratch and do so much more.  Finally, we had assessment week, where Y6 got their first taste of the SAT tests.

The last week we didn’t stop.  We finished off units, did tests, made calendars and sang carols at the Christmas service.

I wish you a rest-filled break and a very merry Christmas.
