Year 4 Essential Information - Autumn 1
Welcome to Year 4! It has been so lovely to welcome the children back from their summer breaks, full of their summer stories and ready to learn.
Our Year 4 team this year is Miss White, Miss Dakin and Miss McNamara.
Miss Dakin is the class teacher on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Miss White is the class teacher on Tuesdays and Fridays.
On Thursdays, Miss Dakin will teach in the morning and Miss White will teach in the afternoon.
Miss McNamara is Year 4 teaching assistant.

Homework In Year 4
Reading: Reading helps children’s learning in a huge number of ways, including improving their vocabulary, developing the quality of their writing and building their comprehension skills. We expect children to read at home at least three times per week. Your child should record the books they have read in the green reading record and bring this to school for checking each Monday.
Spellings: A new spelling list will be sent home each Friday and should be practised regularly, in short bursts throughout the week, ready for a test on the following Friday. The children will also have some opportunities in class to practise. In the Friday test, five of the ten words will be tested, as individual words, and the new spellings for next week will be taught in a spelling lesson.
Times Tables Rock Stars: Using TTRS to practise times tables regularly at home is a very good idea. Just a three minute burst every day should see recall speeds continue to improve.
PE
PE Days this half term will be Wednesday and Friday. Please ensure that your child comes to school on those days dressed in PE kit including a pair of trainers.
Things to remember:
- All children should bring a named flask or bottle of water to school. This should be taken home and washed every day.
- Named pumps must be worn in school. Children should be able to tie laces quickly if they have lace-up pumps/outdoor shoes and pumps should be checked by a parent every half term to ensure they are in good condition to prevent trip hazards.
- Named, appropriate clothing for the weather should be brought every day – please ensure your child has a coat in school every day.
- School Policy is that, other than for religious reasons, children should not wear jewellery in school apart from a watch (smart watches are not allowed). These need to be removed for PE lessons.

Castles!

This week in Year 4 we have been busy building castles! We started the term by looking at 3D shapes that are strong and would be a useful feature of a castle. We then had a go at building nets for these shapes so that we could see which ones we might be able to use. The children then spent time designing their castles by drawing their idea, labelling the materials that they were going to need, noting down their design specification and adding any additional extras they wanted to add to complete their castle design!
This week we started building our castles with the materials we collected at home, nets and paper. The children have made a fantastic start to these, keep an eye out for the finished product next week!
Computer Safety

Although it was our last day together today, Year 4 did some very important learning about online safety after a week of thinking about all the good and the bad that the internet can bring. They are clued up about lots of things which will keep them safe and produced some slogans this afternoon about how to look after each other online in times when online abuse might be happening. Pics below.
Thank you so much to you all for your support in the lead up to my maternity leave - I will miss my class very much but know that they will have a brilliant rest of the year with Miss Hamilton who is so excited to be their new teacher after getting to know them over the last couple of weeks. Class Collective Worship

It's been a particularly busy week in Year 4 with the children being taught by both me, and Miss Hamilton, who is really enjoying getting to know them, not to mention Mrs Starkey and Mrs Whitehead! But as usual, they have taken it all in their stride and done some super learning, from the geography of Scandinavia to the artwork of Edvard Munch to some very dramatic Anglo-Saxon story planning!
However, the high point of the week had to be Wednesday's collective worship all about the Christian value of hope. With so many of you able to join us for it, we're sure you'll agree that they did an amazing job, projecting their voices, creating imaginative role plays to support the aim of the worship and writing such thoughtful prayers. Well done, Year 4 - be very proud of yourselves!
5Ks Treasure Hunt

This week, the children were continuing with their Sikhism learning, finding out about what the 5Ks are and what they mean to Sikhs now. However, it wasn't as easy as being told the information though - the children had to hunt for jigsaw pieces around the room first! They did a great job and worked really well as a team to succeed. Year 4, can you remember what each of the 5Ks were to tell your adults?

We've had a great week this week and after lots of effort and determination, the children finished the book covers that they have been making in DT for the last few weeks! I'm sure you'll agree that they have done a super job - sewing is never easy but these look lovely and are all fit for purpose so I look forward to seeing them in class, filled with the children's reading matter over the next couple of weeks!
