Homework In Year 4

ReadingYour child's reading book should travel to and from school with them every day, alongside their green reading record. Reading helps children’s learning in a huge number of ways, including improving their vocabulary, developing the quality of their writing and building their comprehension skills. We expect children to read at home at least three times per week. We ask that a parent or carer sign this off in the reading record to be checked in school each Monday.

Spellings: A new spelling list will be sent home each Friday and should be practised regularly, in short bursts throughout the week, ready for a test on the following Friday. The children will also have some opportunities in class to practise. In the Friday test, five of the ten words will be tested, as individual words, and the new spellings for next week will be taught in a spelling lesson.

Mathletics: This is to be completed every week – there will be new Mathletics tasks set each Thursday with trickier tasks (those scoring less than 50%) being re-set. Please check if your child needs support with any re-set tasks.

Times Tables Rock Stars: Using TTRS to practise times tables regularly at home is a very good idea. Just a three minute burst every day should see recall speeds continue to improve.

PE

This half term the children will have PE or Forest School on a Wednesday. You will already have received a letter to let you know on which dates your child will be taking part in Forest School. For PE, your child needs black jogging bottoms or leggings, a white t shirt, a black hoodie or tracksuit top and a pair of trainers. For Forest School, your child needs clothing suitable for the outdoors, which they do not mind getting dirty. Your child should come to school on a Wednesday wearing either their Forest School clothing or their PE Kit; they do not need to change during the school day.

 Things to remember:

  • All children should bring a named flask or bottle of water to school. This should be taken home and washed every day.
  • Named pumps must be worn in school. Children should be able to tie laces quickly if they have lace-up pumps/outdoor shoes and pumps should be checked by a parent every half term to ensure they are in good condition to prevent trip hazards.
  • Named, appropriate clothing for the weather should be brought every day – please ensure your child has a coat in school every day. Gloves and hats are also a good idea at this time of year.
  • School Policy is that, other than for religious reasons, children should not wear jewellery in school apart from a watch (smart watches are not allowed). These need to be removed for PE lessons.

Clay Modelling

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 4 Class Blog

Following on from last terms art work on the Vikings we created some clay models linked to this work. The children were able to choose what they wanted to create and then they worked on adding patterns and finer details.
The children really enjoyed this work and they created some fantastic models as you can see!

Computing Wrapping Paper!

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 4 Class Blog

This week the Year 4's have been finishing their computing unit by designing their own wrapping paper. Their task was to create a design which used more than one shape with a count-controlled loop! They had to input different algorithms to create different shapes, colours and designs.

It was an incredibly hard task and they all did so well! As you can see in the photos they were on their way to making some fantastic wrapping paper designs!

Viking Art

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 4 Class Blog

This term we are learning about the Vikings. In art we have been exploring some of the patterns that were found on a chest, stones, doorways and jewellery.

The children looked closely at the patterns and zoomed in closely on certain parts, having a go at sketching them and unpicking them to see if they could spot any animals or familiar patterns.
They worked incredibly hard on this as it wasn't easy and have done a fantastic job. We are going to be continuing to explore more Viking art across this term, finishing with some clay modelling!

Reading Book Recommendations!

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 4 Class Blog

Following on from parents evening I wanted to show you where you are able to find some books which are recommended for Year 4.

On our school website if you go to the 'curriculum' drop down option and then to 'reading' you will find a document for each year group which has 50 book recommendations listed.

There is also the following link where you can find more...

I hope this helps!

Science Day- Bubbles!

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 4 Class Blog

Today we had a science day which was focused around bubbles!

We started the morning exploring how we could make the biggest bubbles and which surfaces we could get the bubbles to land on. The children were also experimenting with whether they could pass a bubble to one another.

We then started to focus on our investigation question 'can you make a bubble inside a bubble'?

We made predictions and talked about the equipment that we might need and then the children had some time to test various ways of making a bubble within another bubble.
The children did so well with this and they were able to make multiple bubbles inside one another!

We had such a fun day and got to experiment, ask and answer lots of questions!

Well done Year 4!
