Adel St John The Baptist

Welcome to Year 6

Year 6 Curriculum Map

A new term and we are half way through the year- how is it going so quickly?

Topic Book/ History

Our topic for this term will be World War Two.  Our class text will be 'When The Sky Falls' by Phil Earle- a story which is set during the Blitz in London.  Our focus will be learning about some causes of World War Two, the Home Front and The Blitz.

English

A lot of our writing will link with our topic and class text.

Please ensure your child is reading at the very least 3 times per week at home to support them, not just reading independently but also with an adult or sibling, allowing for discussions around what they have read.  Children take home a planner and I ask that they fill in new words or phrases they have found 3 times a week.  To be successful this year, it is imperative they develop a broad and in-depth knowledge of precise vocabulary and can infer meaning from what they have read.  A parent or carer should then sign off what they have written.  We will check the planners every week (each Monday).  In addition to this, children will have activities in their SATs revision booklets to complete every Monday, which will be expected to hand in the following Monday.  There will be around 8 pages of the maths one each week and a new practice test each week with the SPAG.

Science

In science, our topic will be Evolution and Inheritance where children will learn about classifying different living things as well as how animals are adapted to suit their environment which may lead to evolution.

Maths

Our topics this half term will be: decimals; fractions, decimals and percentages; area, perimeter and volume; statistics and shape (we will aim to get as much of these topics covered as possible so there is time to revise areas of the maths curriculum before the SATs next term.

RE

We will be learning about the Salvation this term and specifically learning what difference the resurrection makes to Christians.

Computing

In computing, this half term, we will be focussing on programming.

PE

So that we have sessions with a specialist PE teacher from YMCA Leeds, our PE days for this half term will be WEDNESDAYS and Fridays (rather than Tuesdays and Fridays).  Please would children come to school in PE kits on those days.  The two units this half term will be Fitness and Basketball.

DT

We will be designing and making pop-up books (building on what we learnt about this last year).

Music

Our unit will be 'Exploring Notation Further'.

French

We will be learning how to talk about 'The Date'.

PSHE

We will be covering the topic of sex and relationship education.  We will be focusing on body changes, hygiene, healthy relationships and how a baby is made.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information and please do not hesitate to be in touch.

Kind regards,

Mr Smithson, Mrs Williams and Mrs Whitehead

Practice SATs Complete!

Posted: Apr 28, 2023 by: Will Smithson (wsmithson) on: Year 6 Class Blog

The children have completed their week of practice SATs and I couldn't be more proud of them: their confidence, composure and determination has really shone through.  The results have shown that they have made super progress this year and have understood what has been taught in the core Key Stage 2 subjects really well.  Well done, children!  You have shown that you are ready for the exams, but (more importantly) you have demonstrated excellent understanding and an exemplary attitude throughout.
